The present day 6.1-mile-long (9.8 km) Main Line operates as a surface line in Downtown Buffalo on an exclusive transit mall, and underground (like a subway) from the north end of Downtown to the University at Buffalo's South Campus. Many of the proposed extensions would be built on abandoned railroad rights-of-way (ROW), costing a fraction of what it would cost for excavating and creating new underground rail tunnels. The two proposals mentioned are a small part of the massive multi-line system, with proposals to go as far south as Hamburg and Orchard Park, as far east as Lancaster and as far north as Niagara Falls, New York. The CRTC has recommended construction of its proposed "Airport Corridor" and proposed "Tonawandas Corridor". The group was formed in June 2023 and has held several community meetings to inform the public of the details concerning the proposal. They are citizens intent on bringing awareness and leading opposition to the one billion dollar Buffalo Metro Rail Expansion proposal currently published by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. Most recently a group Stop The Metro was formed based in Erie County, New York and is a cooperative of community members comprised from neighboring townships Amherst, New York and Tonawanda (town), New York. One organization, the Citizens Regional Transportation Corporation (CRTC), promotes the implementation and expansions of light-rail service for the City of Buffalo and the surrounding Buffalo/Niagara region in New York State. Public officials, agencies and advocacy groups have created plans, with the most recent and formidable being an extension to the town of Amherst. Since the Buffalo Metro Rail light rail was proposed in the 1970s, there have been multiple proposals for expanding the system, which is currently a single 6.4-mile (10.3 km) long line.
